II Trilhos do Lince - Penamacor

Boas pedaladas,

Pedaladas boas,
casf

Good cycling,

This event started before the date itself, in 2012, we did 99km!! Passed through Spain, went up to Malcata Mountain and cycling back to Penamacor, with the possibility to seeing a lynx!! This year, due to poor adherence to 85km, we received an informative email, this distance it was not in - relief and despair.

My fasting blood glucose was 126mg/dL, I reduce the fast and basal insulin units, the basal is the key to a “peaceful” day and the remaining hours. It was the announced cold temperature with blasts, lengthen that impression. I lifted the bag with everything that belonged to me (loved the content, at home, even more!).

When heating I talking with a recently friend, during all briefing time, till they "oblige" us to follow, had already given the started! We've been together for a while, unfortunately for me, we also speak about technical issues. I can say, after this detail, that lately I have with holes, I noticed something soft on the back... 8km were going, I asked him, also because I didn't have GPS, something with the "ON" button!! Confirmed, another event, one more hole! I follow on the possible pace: stop, confirm, fills and refills!

It was not finish! Recognizing the place, we were coming to 1st supply zone, Freixial Camping Park, Águas - Penamacor (was the final Scout camping activities every year), I put my hands into my pockets, no, no blood glucose meter!!! I started having to manage everything much more carefully. I had the impression of being in a high value... The VITARGO ELECTROLYTE was "consistent" and I filled with H2O, ate a banana, orange, a ham sandwich and grabbed two cereals bars. The tire... after a few more "pumped" seemed to hold up.

The Spanish’s from Gata Sierra mark strong presence in this event and we leave "together". For a good kilometer was stopping to fill "my fate", pass nearly streams, I ate cereals bars and some cookies, we passed the 2nd supply (only liquids, on a road "merged" to Spain, where there were technical assistance, but for me was everything okay!), passed through bridges, made some ascents and the Spanish’s disappeared ... I had to fill the tire!

I have a slight resistance to mud (should be from the almost white equipment), but on this event should be a lesson to me. Why I turn away - "happy" - I ended up in a climb, I climb and continued to rise, always thinking I was on the right path till a rather wide intersection. If I haven't seen any indications for some time, there, wasn't nothing (and was well marked: ribbons, arrows and cut way)! I went down almost everything, till find two raiders, but I didn’t demote from what I was already convinced, and so, I "showed them" the way up. Conclusion, we call the Organization, it was to descend. I put my 29 CF SLX looking of "tapes"!!!

There was the mud, and I had to spend though, quickly reach the car, motorbike and the bike broom. We went to 4 elements and headed toward the 3rd supply zone. I could went away and before I descent to the 3rd supply, I cross with a Bambi - white tail - it jumped in front of me on the trail, from one side to another - almost Cape Epic style!

From that supply, I ate on a management basis; half a glass of juice with a cheese sandwich, fruit, a bar and water. I left with a lead of 5 minutes, and quickly got caught, lacked 20km to the finish line. I discovered which led the last holes and with the Organization help we repaired this issue. During these miles was recovering some positions, on some consecutive rises transactions, helped by my weight and this 29 wheel.

I finished well, without hypo symptoms, all the way. Probably I did around 60km... The basal insulin - 24h effect - is critical in this type of activity - aerobic - having your values controlled during the activity, is fundamental the knowledge of your body reactions after activity, avoid hypo episodes, and therefore, putting less insulin, avoid hyperglycemia.

At lunch time I had 116mg/dL.
From 46 riders I finish 38 with 4:38:20h

Cycling good,
casf

Selinda BTT - Sertã

Boas pedaladas,

Alguns aspetos menos bons;

Calorias 2.502
Ganho de elevação 2.211m

Good cycling,

Within my blood glucose value controlled, I took a simple breakfast and headed to Sertã, temperature, outside, was between 7°C and 11.5°C while Bill Evans "sang to my ear."

After I lifting my dorsal, with enough time, I drank coffee and prepared everything, I went to control point, the speaker called by us.

At this time the temperature was cool but the announced was a summer day. Separation tracks was at 5km, from there I follow with Gabriel Neves, who I met at that time. With his knowledge of the region was barely need GPS, he knew the names of all the places that we toured. Early I resorted to my pockets to substantiate my cycling until, the supply was almost 2/3 of the total accumulated.

This route have fantastic views, those we pass through Cabril dam were amazing, these canyons climbs foresaw a serious uphill, being compensated for their beauty!
At home I have a reputation that all happen to me when I go to MTB events... It is true, mainly because I'm not lying, and yet...!

Before 1st supply, those who went for 65km, we followed close to each other (about 10 riders, off the front leaders, those, taking a warm bath), I discovered "being losing air" on the rear wheel. A long way down through the sidewalk through the tunnel took us to 1st supply. A fantastic view on the slope of the river, I didn't record anything by the apparatus to the tire. I filled and while eaten it held.

The glucose meter did not work, the test strips had to be out of date... I redid the VITARGO ELECTROLYTE, some juice with a cheese sandwich, a cereal bar - some for my pocket - and a banana.
Flanking the several mud puddles, "I didn’t resist" and I fell, already unbalanced, into a "water spa" puddle, camel color. Just ahead (the inner tube hole just "endured" those first uphill’s), and so we stop again (perhaps by 30km), with Gabriel we proceeded to patch the problem. In full ascent, we let "get away" the others...

This route has amazing single tracks, many have wooden buildings, purposely built by the Selinda BTT Organization.

Last tunnel is always fabulous, 30m completely in the dark, this year had water by the feet’s.
The signaling tapes along the course, danger warnings, road intersections with elements supervising, I congratulate, all was perfect! Already, by the end, we returned to 7 runners (we recover the time fro, the hole repair)!

Some less good aspects;
On 2nd supply, had practically nothing to eat, a few meters ahead, they already took some signaling tapes, we find strange and inform we weren't the last ones. 3rd supply was “found” with no one and really closes from the previous.

From the mud and flooded spots on the last kilometers, 800m from the end I got the bike by hand! The patch went off!! I ended up sitting in the "jeep broom" was 15:30pm!
I finished without log my time, the same for some riders, perhaps the hour time advancing and the finish arch no longer was there...

Cycling good,

casf

III BTT IFCC - Cebolais de Cima

Boas pedaladas,

Obrigado NUNO DIAS pelas fotos.

Pedaladas boas,

Good cycling,
With a high fasting glucose (274 mg/dL) I reduce the basal and fast insulin units, eating a light meal...

I raised my dorsal, and ask for a black coffee with a small cake with chocolate chips - from the breakfast table offered by the organization - I don't "seen" anything hot until late!
Gray was the prime color with some rain too, we left after warnings of cautions about tracks conditions. For this reason speed was limited, the groupings emerging on water areas and/or lower areas, completely flooded, at 5km I started with the right ankle and from there it was up to the knees on both legs. On certain occasions my Grand Canyon CF SLX 29 went in my lap.

With stunning views (green landscapes, water lines, the track beside the river, through the pines...), till 1st supply zone for several times I had to put down my foots down, supporting the many slippages from 29 wheel on stone ground - the well size causes equal fall impression - fortunately without FALLS!!!

1st Supply, 1st measurement -192 mg/dL, however had already eaten a banana I took with me, I took some cereal bars, filled with water bottle my VITARGO ELETROLYTE, ate a cake slice and an 1/4 orange. The tracks wear dangerous, heavy, but with a positive feedback regarding technical areas vs 29er, but slipping wheel needed some respect!!!

I although not mentioned but I got lost several times, the night before rain vanish much of the whitewash track signals.

Without notice the routes separation I made the "wall" climbed accompanied to the turbines when suddenly the question arises: 35km or 65km? Tired already, was the clock who kept me going, were 11h:40min.

I realized only a few marks on the ground, there weren't many riders before me (in fact I was the last one).

In 2nd supply, talking with the organization elements, they confessed me, for every athlete who passed by they served a red wine glass, who drank they joined him, if not, they drank for him! With me, were only 9 riders, I closed the largest distance peloton; I knew it in the end! I joined them with a glass of cola, pork ham sandwich, banana and one or two slices of homemade cake. Before I arrived there I had resorted to my pockets and yet, here, I measured 97 mg/dL.

This 1st "competitive" marathon, this year was with a lot of rain, quite evident on tracks, some in the air, numerous water lines passages - interesting episode this - maybe at 55km I step by a couple who ate on they truck, who question me if I was going though there, I would be whole wet, plus the raining! I told them since morning, had undergone more than ten water lines and "ENJOY YOUR MEAL, I'll go for the same"!

Cycling alone is one feature of me in long marathons, my pace - lack of it - associated with blood glucose controls that sometimes force me to stop to FILL THE TANK, I always end up facing the tracks, knowing the lack of regular training will affect me more than my blood glucose value.
Summary:
Position: 9, the last from 65km track - 5:59:05pm

V Rota do Aveite - Proença-a-Velha

Boas pedaladas,

Pedaladas boas,
casf

PS - Algumas fotos agradeço a Senhora do BTT. Obrigado.

English
Good cycling,

Last year’s blue O start the MTB season in Rota do Azeite – “Olive Oil Route” from ACIN in Proença-a-Nova, known for his singles tracks that by this time of the year are so green.

Green was my 29er state, already with driving position "retouched" to my riding style.

With some apprehension in the morning 205mg/dL, followed by insulin units reducing and one enhanced breakfast.

Because the sun till Saturday was king, it made me believe that we would have heat, but winter was more powerful. It was a really COLD morning!!!

I Confirm, the 29 wheel passes truth everything, with better security, streams included! The main change I made was the stem from 80mm to 100mm and a tighter handlebar, I guaranteed at least on this route, I haven't lost any manoeuvre skill and there were some technical parts; stones, mud, tight singles, climbs and rapid descents...

Until the supply zone I did it with Carlos Cli a cycling "consultation" with details here and there! In rolling sections I noticed an evidence progress by the lightness of the bike and I’m always pleased to pass by villages where residents come the street to watch the peloton passing (Aldeia de Santa Margarida, near Pedrogão, Bemposta, Medelin and Proenca-a- Nova).

On supply I put at the disposal of a friend my CF SLX 9.9 to a quick "test drive", He had never tried one, he give me the most high praise and behaviour, also the "attack position" of it.

I approached the table, ACIN style is always guaranteed, before I resigned myself, my blood glucose meter was with low battery. Lucky me the ride was small and I was restrained my mouth; banana, a small glass of juice with a meat ball slice, a cereal bar and a muffin direct to my pocket.

Have I said it was COLD?
I cooling again, we were in Bemposta - halfway through - and to warm up - something that hasn't happened - I grabbed the Grand Canyon CF SLX 9.9 blue O Edition and I "attacked".

I prepared the water bottle with PURE VITARGO that, on supply I diluted, but 10km to the end I ate the muffin, the plastic bag came with me on the equipment and even used as a "windscreen", I make a point of it.

I finish the race with very positive note about my new cycling partner and ready to go the shower, only then I've HEATING myself!!!

While packing everything, I take VITARGO PROTEIN what made me to get lunch time with 121mg/dL, the rain already fall and made sure to keep with us during eating.

Summary:
Fantastic as usual from ACIN.
The track, route markings, persons on road crossings, supply, really hot baths, lunch with rain and cold time... You can't ask for everything!

Cycling good,
casf
