My english version:
Insulin units were based for marathon, I reduce by half the basal and on my 114 mg/dL blood glucose, I took a unit from fast insulin (in theory, means nothing, but in practice...). Breakfast consisted of white bread with "sugar free" jelly and a slice of homemade cake with a coffe milk. On start line concentration I ate a banana.
The most awaited marathon of the year used to be with last days of summer time, this year, rain came in big, just standing on star line, before leaving at 9am, we caught 1st wet.
From tracks, Monsanto village was seen covered by a heavy cloud.
Until Medelin village rolling was easy, however lands felt heavy from rains, all week before. The pace was strong and to do the marathon with the advertised 95 km, I had to calculate the effort to avoid surprises at the end.
There, on 1st supply, also paths division, I measure 208 mg/dL, grab half banana, an apple, eat a "madalena" cake with a cereal bar. With this purpose from the start, no rain so far, I went to the marathon...
Notoriously with fewer
athletes we followed through Medelin single track and a few km forward passes by me, in the opposite direction, two "riders", while eating the fruit had brought from supplie. It made me think about, along with the heavy sky upon us... After 22 km started raining, I wear my waterproof to never remove it till the end. This part of the route, with more or less variants, is the most difficult to overcome, is 25 km.
The rain, started moderate, became permanent, sometimes really sharp intensity, dry, practically only the phone and the glucose meter inside a plastic bag in my pocket.
The progression with this saturated terrain, started to be quite difficult, at certain times, dangerous. In Penha Garcia top, before we descend to the village, while taking a picture, my friends Pedro Roxo, Rui Salgueiro and Vasco Soares came in group, followed them for long km of the tracks.
Descending to Penha Garcia village is always dangerous, through wet stones multiplies in danger. Almost no tourists due to weather conditions, is never overstate its landscapes beauty and interest. We arrived at 2nd supply with 2 athletes stopped for technical reasons, a new flood take over while I measure my blood sugar, 114 mg/dL. I ate a cheese sandwich, drank juice, protein bar and new "madalena" cake. Here, Organisation provide energy gels. For the 2nd time I twisted my gloves, I'm already resented from cold.
Mostly smooth till Monsanto, had some technical stops where a subject was widely discussed; what we could do not being there at the moment, especially in those conditions but, behold, settles the power of human transformation due to rain, I caught some random sentences I remember:
- If our women's know!?...
- This isn't to any ne who take scare...
- Your brakes make much noise!?
- It didn't stop anything, I was actually trying to clean them...
- Pull my coat up, I can't move my arms!
- I can't put my gears in small plate!
- But how many pockets have you anyway on your backpack?
- Oil, for what?
- Where is Monsanto?... There!... It can't see anything!... It's from the rain!!!
- Rain? But it's raining...?!
They continued and I stay on 3rd supply, where I ate a "borrachão" - tipically dry cake, and took a gel:
- "Oh, you know the name of our cakes?"
- "My parents are from Idanha-a-Nova"...
- "Humm, with glasses you are all alike!"
- "Oh I know, I'll see similarities, yes sir!!!"
- "Thank you, later"
The ascent to Monsanto by Roman road was slippery. Uphill the weather was worse, there wasn't opportunity for photos, taking off mean getting wet... Descent was fast but with necessary caution, this year was design a technical section before the descent to Idanha-a-Velha where I joined again the trio!
In 4th and final supply, Idanha-a-Velha villafe, fell off a new flurry (Pedro, Rui and Vasco had left), I was informed that in 10 years it was the 2nd year with rain, no matter because from rain and cold "I run away on seven feet's", this year it took revenge on me from the time I looked out the window and didn't went out because it was raining!
The last few miles to the finish were painful, completely cold, the rain and the wind gradually increased in intensity, here or there, surpassing or be supassed by some "survivor" from this painful day.
After 7: 17: 14h I finish another marathon event, I can say, the worst and toughest in the practical sense, the rain was solidarity with me and my diabetes, always intends, chronic!
Hot and good rides,
PS - To get an idea from how the body continues consuming Carbon Hydrates, even after finish physical effort, on Monday, a day after I almost did not had fast insulin, ate normal and slightly reduced the basal and even then the hippos threatened.
