V Maratona BTT Alcains-Gardunha

Boas pedaladas,

O inicio, situado a meio do pelotão, foi muito rápido durante os primeiros 15 kms, para mim sabendo que não poderia continuar ao mesmo nível com aqueles que pedalavam naqueles instantes, “pereceu” ver um “amigo” que estava parado de volta do seu pneu da frente;

Pedaladas boas,
casf

Good rides,

The low blood sugar (hipo) from the night before, anticipating a high glucose; 242 mg/dL on the morning of 17/04/2011.

In my Starbucks coffee mug "diverted" at Birmingham airport - at the time I had a job that make me travel around Europe - I served my milk with coffee and my "regular" breakfast of competition day, together with bread and jam, juice fruit - 100% of the packet - and even some bits on cookies, in Portugal they called “Maria”, as every genuine Portuguese women - I’m joking!!!

No so normal, I arrived early in all aspects, a little guessing what would be the event...

The beginning, located in the middle of the group, was very fast during the first 15 kms, to me, knowing I couldn’t continue on the same level with those who I intented to follow, on a specific moment I "perished" I saw a "friend" who was standing back from is front tire;

Hey mate, "Miguel" it's everything ok?

Yes, it’s a hole, I'm getting into "anti-hole" but this doesn't seem to be working...

I’ve a pump, want some air? (On last resort he agreed, on the forced stop, I had already gotten a bit of “caloricgel into my mouth).

Me and "Miguel" around back on the tire, only when we stand over, noting that he was not able to continue, I realize that it was not "my" friend Miguel. MTB "it’s not what it seems”, sun glasses and helmets looks like swimming caps.

I apologized and went down one some tracks that provided a quick ride ending on a passing small river preceding the "only" rising around 45kms from this half Marathon.

In only supply zone I ate bananas, oranges quarters, one of my cereal bar, plus a "kiss" in the “caloricgel, H2O and I leave!

At some point I stop to taken some photos from the larger landscape of the route, noting that I would ending early without a declared low blood sugar (hypo).

The course always rolled fast, during much of the kms I "catch up" with my recent cycling friend, Abílio Fidalgo, we both finished with 2h 21min, right before 90th position.

Haven’t felt signs of low blood sugar, after taking my bath, packing everything in the car, I get 89 mg/dL the hypo was a matter of minutes.

NOTE - A high glycemia in the morning, lowing to half the normal units of insulin before a caloric breakfast, rolled in a “something” fast manner and everything else, I getting a value in the way to a hypo, that sometimes appear after I bath.

Rides good,
casf

TRANS... (Maratona X50 de 2010 formato passeio) (X50 Marathon from 2010)

Boas pedaladas,

Pedaladas boas,
casf

English...

Good rides,

This track was, from my point of view, a kind of Geo Trans...

At 8am the Magnificent Seven leave. I was the less prepared!

The rain combined with spring temperatures carries out these transformations in nature, greenery at its full strength, getting the legs with several "massages" - scratches.

After the first 10 km 1st TRANS... of a small river with water to the knees. On the top hill, after 15 km we took a "photo split”, 3 for the X100 Marathon from 2010 (João Valente and Fernando Micaelo with Trek twins and Agnelo Quelhas) us (Nuno Diaz, Falcão / Hamk, Abílio Fidalgo and me) for the "intended" X50 Marathon from 2010, but...

Using the GPS's we followed the trail "always straight", but after another dizzying descent (all of them down like DH throne kings) we found the next river to "TRANS...POSITION" would be complicated. Nuno, adventurer, took two steps into the river and from the depth and river current strength would be impossible TRANSPOSITION on that spot.

Track inversion, we ascend the "wall" that before we go down, as I'm light I climb without too much trouble (if I don’t get one hypo), on the tope I toke a banana that I carry to keep blood sugar levels stable.

We put GPS finding alternatives, we follow, given the opportunity to communicate and keep in touch about blue O Project. These three friends always careful, not to move away off their wheels.

I mentioned this detail before, because I did not know the route, stops and possible kms to do, I "lost myself" a little, intake of carbohydrates.

Therefore it was interesting, it’s the real ride for the pleasure of doing so, I agree with you Hawk, as I leave with me a super caloric GEL I started by the 25km taking a little at the time, and a normal grocery cereals bar during.

Arriving at another TRANS...POSITION riverside it was Nuno, again, that confirmed with three steps in there was very deep, with the water by the waist, then, with my “eagle eye” I see a lower spot, thankfully, because in the middle of it, with the bike on the top of my arms, I literally dip into, wetting two thirds of my body, equipment included.

In the middle of some laugh (it was the first time that we ride together) on the other side was Nuno who lent me a winter Jersey, since the GPS was indicating another ascent to climb that took us to Barbaido location (known, affectionate, as the "center of the World").

I titled TRANS... because they were three rivers transpositions that we make, before we reach Juncal village we had the opportunity to once again wet our legs (in Portugal we say: there aren’t two times without a third one. The gel (only one) was regularly eaten, with plenty of H2O, until we get here. From there I “place” myself regarding the missing kms to the end of it, reaching Castelo Branco city (60km, around 5h, several route changes and three rivers crossings and a bath in the middle of all).

My special thanks to these three friends, the blue O will consider whether to have another TRANS... ride this year. Is there someone how can give me the confirmation when the sun will start to “burn”?!

Rides good,
casf
